Evolve Kamado vs Kamado Joe: How the Two Compare

Evolve or Kamado Joe? Grate size, accessory systems, how each is sold, and which suits you. The numbers both makers publish, plus where Kamado Joe wins.

Evolve or Kamado Joe? The short version: Kamado Joe has the longer track record, the wider retail presence and the more developed accessory system; Evolve gives you more grate surface and a fixed online price. Which matters more depends on how you buy and how you cook.

Below are the figures each manufacturer publishes, and then an honest read of where each one is genuinely better.

The specs side by side

The fair comparison for the Evolve Ultra Series is the Kamado Joe Classic line — that is the size most buyers in this bracket are choosing between.

Five centimetres of diameter sounds minor until you remember surface grows with the square. Around 2,040 cm² against roughly 1,700 is close to 20 percent more room — in practice, the difference between fitting two racks of ribs flat and having to prop one up.

Where Kamado Joe is stronger

Three things, and none of them are small.

The Divide & Conquer system is genuinely good design. Half-grates at two heights let you sear over the fire and hold something else higher and cooler at the same time, and it ships as a coherent system rather than parts you assemble yourself. If you cook several things at once, that is a real advantage.

The retail network means you can stand next to one before buying, and parts are available from a shop rather than only by post. For some buyers that is worth paying for.

And the track record. Kamado Joe has been in the market far longer, with the second-hand values and accumulated community knowledge that follow from it. Evolve is a younger brand and does not pretend otherwise.

Where Evolve is stronger

Surface area, for one: 51 cm against 18 inches, roughly 20 percent more cooking area at a comparable price point.

Price transparency, for another. Evolve publishes what a grill costs — EUR 749 for The Beauty solo, EUR 799 for The Beast, up to EUR 1,249 for a fully equipped Chef Combo. There is no dealer margin, no negotiating, and no “request a quote”.

And the bundles. A Chef Combo arrives with the cart, side tables, cast iron grates, glazed pizza stone, tools and ash container already included, for less than those parts cost assembled individually.

The question that actually decides it

Do you want to buy a grill, or buy into a system?

If you want the multi-level accessory ecosystem, a dealer to talk to, and a brand with a decade of resale history, Kamado Joe is the safer answer and you should buy it without agonising.

If what you want is the most ceramic and cooking surface per euro, bought at a published price and delivered to your door, that is the case for Evolve. The ceramic does the same physics in both. See the full kamado grill range and decide on the specification rather than the badge.

Frequently asked questions

Is Evolve a direct replacement for a Kamado Joe Classic?

In size terms it sits just above it. The Classic series uses an 18-inch grate, about 46 cm; the Evolve Ultra Series grate is 51 cm, roughly 2,040 cm². Both are ceramic kamados built for the same three jobs — searing, low and slow, and pizza.

Does Evolve have anything like Divide & Conquer?

Not as a single branded system. Evolve sells the components separately — cast iron grates, a glazed pizza stone, a charcoal basket — so you build the setup you actually use. If multi-level cooking is central to how you grill, Kamado Joe has the more developed answer out of the box.

Why is Evolve cheaper for a comparable grill?

Because there is no dealer in between. Evolve publishes fixed prices online and ships direct across Europe; Kamado Joe sells through retailers, whose margin is part of the shelf price.

What about long-term support and spare parts?

Kamado Joe has the longer track record and a wider retail network for parts. Evolve carries a limited lifetime warranty on the ceramic base and dome for the original owner, and sells wear parts directly. If having a local dealer matters to you, weigh that honestly.
